The townland of Shandrum contains the old village of Kilmurry with an ancient church and graveyard.  Oxmount is a local name to an area on the Northern side of the townland of Shandrum.

The Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane has another Tithe Applotment Book from 1834.  After examining this record I found that the townland of Shandrum and Kilmurry is not listed in this record.  This was disappointing to me because I have found important information in other townlands relating to family history within this 9 year period before the famine of 1847 and the movement of so many families from the parish.

There are early baptism records for at least 4 different but which I believe to be related O’Brien families living in Shandrum Townland.  The baptism sponsors and naming patterns of the O’Brien families persuade my thinking along these lines.  This time period in Irish History is difficult to trace the Irish families because of famine and the effect it had on family and farm life in Ireland.  Farms were consolidated at this time by the landlord for profitability and sustainable reasons.  Many Irish families immigrated with assistance from the landlord and with the help of family that had previously made the voyage.  Many of the O’Brien families I have identified in the 1840’s and not found in church or property records after this time.  I assume they died in the famine or immigrated.

One of the family’s is that of Margaret O’Brien Sexton of Clounadrum Townland a neighboring townland to Shandrum.  Margaret Sexton was widowed in the early 1850’s and she gave the farm up and went to Australia to live with her children.  Margaret Sexton’s Australian death record indicates her parents were Jeremiah O’Brien and Mary Corbett.  Jeremiah O’Brien is not a common name in the O’Brien family in this parish but I do find it in the O’Brien’s of Shandrum townland which is next to Clounadrum where Margaret O’Brien Sexton was listed in the 1855 Griffith Valuation.  I can only guess that Margaret O’Brien is originally from Shandrum Townland.

After studying the baptism records for Kilmurry-Ibrickane Parish I have found sponsors for children that indicate that there are relationships between the various O’Brien families.  Jeremiah and Mary O’Brien are noted with residence in at least two O’Brien families in Shandrum.

I have linked the families together in a genealogical family tree program to show the relationships.  I do not have and documentation at this time to verify these relationships but hope to find descendant families that will read this blog and recognize their O’Brien ancestors and help me fill in the pieces of the O’Brien puzzle.

The information listed here is taken from the baptismal and marriage registers of Kilmurry-Ibrickane parish and the property records from County Clare.  I apologize to anyone that I may offend with my approach to this problem of linking families without documentation and I look forward to anyone that can claim and document any family or individual in this townland.

Apologies, you were right! the Martin O Brien I was querying was married and and that was his family (picture u send) I was talking to my brother and was very definite about who he was. The poor man threw himself into the Fergus river in Ennis. He was quite a character and and used to make up poems/songs about local happenings. When I was growing up, there was no TV no electricity for that matter. I think we got the electricity when I was 10/11. I was born 1951. We got a TV when I was 12 just in time to see JFK's funeral. Up until that time, people visited each other at night almost every night ( I remember the question would always be asked 'who did ye have last night?') When they visited if we were saying the rosary they knelt down and said their decade. Then after that the story telling began and they always talked about people who made a difference to their lives. Additionally, that poem was specifically about Kildimo and we knew all the characters and what they might say and it fitted!
