The O’Brien’s of Knockbrack Townland, Miltown Malbay,

Kilfarboy Parish, County Clare, Ireland

I have chosen to include the Knockbrack O’Brien family along with the O’Brien’s of Kilmurry-Ibrickane Parish in my blog because I believe the Knockbrack O’Brien’s are descended from Sylvester O’Brien of Shanaway Townland, County Clare, Ireland. The following gravestones and inscriptions indicate that there is a relationship between the O’Brien’s of Shanaway and Knockbrack.

The earliest property records for this area are the Valuation of Tenents in 1855. This record lists the “Occupiers” of a specific piece of land in the Townland. In Knockbrack Townland in the Parish of Kilfarboy there are two O’Brien families listed as Occupiers. Michael O’Brien in Lot 2 with 34 acres and Margaret O’Brien in Lot 7 with 39 acres.

There is another property record from 1825 called the Tithe Applotment Book but the Townland of Knockbrack in Kilfarboy is not listed and I was not able to identify the families in one of the other listed surrounding townlands. This was a disappointment because often another family generation may be identified through the use of this record. This record from 1825 is before the great exodus of Irish from the parish caused by the Irish Famine of 1845-1851.

Griffith Valuation of Tenements 1855 for Knockbrack we find Lot #2a Michael O’Brien 34 acres and Lots #7a Margaret O’Brien 39 acres. (The descriptions of these properties are detailed on the attached map. The lower case letter “ a” designate the house on the farm)

The General Valuation Revision Lists

After the printing of the Valuation of Tenement Books another set of books called the “Revision Books” were set up to indicate the land transfers by listing the new occupier in a different colored ink on the page. I have made copies of the pages for Knockbrack Townland, Miltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland and noted the changes with the names and transfer dates below.

Lot #2 a.

· 1855 Michael O’Brien is listed as Occupier in the original 1855 Valuation of Tenements. ( I believe that Michael O’Brien is the son of Margaret O’Brien of Lot 7 and he is the brother of Sylvester O’Brien b 1830 who occupied Lot 7a in 1869)

· Circa 1900 Michael O’Brien, son of Michael O’Brien and Margaret Flannagan was listed as Occupier of Lot 2. Margaret Flannagan O’Brien was listed as a widow in the 1901 Census.

· 1925 Sylvester O’Brien son of Michael O’Brien and Margaret Griffin was listed as Occupier of Lot 2. He received the property from his father, Michael O’Brien and was listed as Occupier up into the 1960’s.

Lot#7a.

· 1855 Margaret O’Brien is listed as Occupier in the original 1855 Valuation of Tenements.

· 1869 Sylvester O’ Brien son of Margaret O’Brien received the land of Lot 7 and was listed as Occupier.

· 1897 Bridget Burke O’Brien wife of the late Sylvester O’Brien is listed as Occupier of Lot 7.

· 1908 Sylvester O’Brien son of Sylvester O’Brien and Bridget Burke is listed as Occupier of Lot 7.

· 1933 Norah Curtin O’Brien, wife of the late Sylvester O’Brien is listed as Occupier of Lot 7.

· 1961 Martin O’Brien, son of Sylvester O’Brien and Norah Curtin is listed as Occupier of Lot 7. Martin O’Brien died in Oct 1991.
