THE O’BRIEN FAMILY OF COORE WEST

There were not any O’Briens listed as occupying land in Coore at the time of the 1826 Tithe Applotments or the 1834 Revision Books. This makes me believe that Patrick O'Brien married into the Talty farm in Coor West just before 1840.

At the time of the 1855 Griffith’s Valuation Patrick O’Brien was listed as renting 6 different lots in Coore West and a house from Captain Francis Casey.     Patrick O'Brien of No. 25 was from Shanaway and is the son of James O'Brien.   Patrick O'Brien married Margaret Darcy of Coore West.

No. 25  a. Patrick O’Brien                             House, office and land    83 Acres  (shared with Michael & Matthew D’Arcy & John Tubridy)
No. 31  a. Patrick O’Brien (Patrick)             Herd’s   House and land 21 Acres
No. 32      Patrick O'Brien  (Patrick)               2 Rods
No. 33      Patrick O'Brien  (Patrick)               2 Acres
No. 41  a & d  Patrick O’Brien (Patrick)        25 Perches  ( John Talty has 1 acre)
No. 45      Patrick O’Brien   (Patrick)              1 Acre           (shared with John Talty & Cornelius Gleeson)

The General Valuation Revision Lists indicate the following land transfers of property in the townland of Coor West.

No. 25
a.       Patrick O’Brien  transferred land to James O’Brien in 1869.  At this time the No.25 was divided and James O’Brien was given lot No. 26.
James O’Brien transferred No. 26 to Patrick O’Brien in 1909

No. 31, 32, 33
Patrick O’Brien (Patk) transferred land to James O’Brien 1882
(Patrick O'Brien son Patrick was from Shanaway)
James O’Brien transferred the land to Timothy Pilkington in1925

No. 45         Patrick O’Brien (Patk) transferred land to James O’Brien 1882
James O’Brien transferred the land to Timothy Pilkington in1925

Since there were not any O’Briens living in Coore in 1826 it is believed that Patrick O’Brien married Margaret Darcy of Coore circa 1840 and moved into Coore.  Patrick O’Brien shared an 83 acre farm with Michael and Mathew Darcy and John Tubridy in 1855.  This would be No. 25.   Michael Darcy and Matthew Darcy were probably brothers of Margaret Darcy, Patrick O'Brien's wife.

After studying Killernan Graveyard and finding the Coore O'Brien and Shanaway O'Brien gravestones standing directly next to each other and in line with each other; I can only speculate that Patrick O'Brien may have come from Shanaway from the James O'Brien family.  This would link all the O'Brien's of Coore, Knockanalban, Knockbrack, Killernan, and Shanaway.

There is a letter written to the daughter of Mary O'Brien Quinn of Dunsallagh West circa 1913 from her husband that visited the Dunsallagh West.  It was written that Mary O'Brien Quinn had two sisters and two brothers, names Patrick and Lawrence O'Briens.  Both had families.  Lawrence O'Brien is buried in Killernan Graveyard and has a graveatone erected by his son, David O'Brien in his memory and next to his stone is the grave stone of the O'Brien family of Coore.

Patrick O'Brien married Margaret Darcy of Coore Townland around 1840.  There was not an O'Brien family listed in Coore Townland in the 1826 Tithe Appoltment Books or the 1834 Revision Books.  They has at least 6 children from this marriage.

ERECTED BY / DAVID O'BRIEN SHANAVOE / IN MEMORY OF HIS BELOVED / WIFE BRIDGET O'BRIEN ALIAS HANRAHAN / WHO DIED MAY 28th 1915 AGED 73 YEARS / ALSO HIS MOTHER CATHERINE / O'BRIEN ALIAS WALSH DIED FEB 1st  1890 / AGED 67 YEARS / AND FATHER LAWRENCE O'BRIEN / WHO DIED MARCH 9th 1898 / AGED 84 YEARS and son David who died April 21st 1900 age for 14 years RIP Amen

The grave of the O’Brien Family of Coore is directly next to the grave of Lawrence O’Brien of Shanaway and his Son, David O’Brien.  This leads me to believe that there is a direct connection between the families of Coore and Shanaway .

Brian M. O’Brien of Tuson, Arizona, USA is in the picture taken in November 2011.
Brian is from the family of Stephen O’Brien family of Killernan.
