Millennium for the Battle of Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland 23 April 1014

Tomorrow morning 23 April 2014 my brother and I and a few friends will attend an early Mass at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Buffalo, NY, USA in honor of Brain Boru and the Battle of Clontarf 23 April 1014. 

I had some memorial cards made in remembrance of the occasion.

The O’Brien’s of Tromra Castle, Kilmurry-Ibrickane Parish, Quilty, County Clare, Ireland

Tromra Castle is a townland in the Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane (Mullagh Parish) on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Western County Clare.   The Parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane has a large number of O’Brien Families residing in the parish and many are related through a common ancestor that cannot be documented with a paper trail but has been proven by Y-DNA results.  The family of Thomas O’Brien and Margaret Breen were residing in Tromra Castle in the 1901 Census but the family was not originally from this townland.  At this time we do not have a male Y-DNA sample from this O’Brien family and have not connected them to the branch of O’Briens in the Mullagh Parish.

Thomas O'Brien was born just before the start of the infamous Irish Famine, (1845) He was born in Killard, County Clare, Ireland. The family story is the O’Brien’s were evicted from their house and land by the landlord.  They then went to live in Tromera Castle, Quilty Co. Clare, Ireland.   Their home was in Kilrush District that had the highest eviction rate of any district in all of the 32 counties of Ireland.  

The baptism records start in the Kilmurry-Ibrickane Parish for the family of Thomas O’Brien and Margaret Breen with Mary O’Brien baptized 26 March 1882.  The two oldest sons, Patrick O’Brien born 1877 and Thomas O’Brien born 1880 are not in the parish records.  I believe Patrick and Thomas were baptized in Doonbeg, Killard, County Clare and it was shortly after this the O’Brien family went to live in Tromra Castle, Quilty, County Clare.

Killard Parish is the neighboring Parish to Kilmurry-Ibrickane and the Thomas and Margaret O’Brien did not have to move far away from their previous lands.   Thomas O’Brien and Margaret Breen were probably married around 1875 in Killard.  I have not found a church record or the civil marriage records for this marriage as of yet but if one is found the civil record will list the father’s name of the bride and groom and hopefully list their townland in Killard Parish where they resided.  The civil birth records for the sons, Patrick and Thomas O’Brien will also list the townland.

Thomas O’Brien died in March 1910 and was buried back in his home Parish of Killard in the Killard Graveyard.  Buried with him are some of his family members.

Killard Graveyard is situated in the townland of Killard, north west of Doonbeg village, Killard Parish.

In loving memory of Thomas O'Brien, Tramore died March 1910 aged 71 years

The first entry in the Valuation Revision Books has John O’Brien the son of James O’Brien listed as “Occupier” of Lot# 59 and 60.  In Lot# 59 b house, Margaret White was the occupier and Michael Looney (Wm) was the immediate lessor.

Michael Looney is listed of “Occupier” of Lot  61 & 62.   It appears that John Looney and Michael Looney (Wm) and sharing these four Lots.  Michael Looney’s wife is Margaret O’Brien.  I believe she was a sister of John O’Brien.  There is not a baptism record for Margaret O’Brien but I have found that most families are missing baptism records for some of the children in each family.  Michael Looney probably married into the O’Brien farm of Mount Scott.

John O’Brien died in March 1889 and his wife Bridget Moloney O’Brien took the farm over for a year.  Then her son-in-law, Timothy McMahon  husband of daughter, Catherine O’Brien.                                           

Michael Looney died in 1890 and his wife Margaret O’Brien Looney took over the farm for 3 years and then son William Loonedy took over the farm.

Lot 62

Timothy McMahon died around 1925 and Martin Gallagher took over the property.  I believe the Sexton family now has the farm in 2014.

William Looney died in 1918 and his son John Looney received the property.  John died around 1945 and passed the land on to Timothy Halloran the husband of his daughter, Catherine Looney.  Timothy Halloran knows as Tadgh O’Halloran of Mt Scott was a 2^nd cousin of my father’s.  Tadgh died in 1984 and his nephew Michael Sexton  received the property and still holds the property in 2014.

Notes for Matthew O'Brien:

Bernard O'Brien, 41 Croyeon Street, Karori, Wellington, New Zealand

Oral tradition has it that there were other borthers; that the family ran a "row of shops" - although it is not known where this would have been.

Matthew and his brothers had a dispute with their father and "jumped the counter". His daughter, May b 1870 told her nephew Charles John O'Brien Jr. b. 1924 that Matthew's trade was really a shop keeper (or draper) rather than a farmer. counsin Joan O'Brien daughter of John Francis O'Brien told cousin, Monica Hanrahan (nee O'Brien - Matt's daughter tha Grandfather, Matthew had been a bookseller. He was sick of selling books and left on horseback with his friend McClure. He was a successful farmer.

Matthew O'Brien arrived in NZ along with his friend McClure and they brought property in the Leeston District just South of Christchurch, on the South Island, NZ.

They traveled via the Victorian Australian goldfields and had obviously done well commercially to be able to buy property. We do not know wheather the good fortune was from mining (gold) or from commercial activities (trading).

There is an interesting account of Matthew's death in the farm diary and also from the obituary in the newspaper at the time whcih shows that he was well a respected member of that pioneer farming community.

Matthew's wife came from Taum, County Galway.
