The first entry in the Valuation Revision Books has John
O’Brien the son of James O’Brien listed as “Occupier” of Lot# 59 and 60. In Lot# 59 b house, Margaret White was the occupier
and Michael Looney (Wm) was the immediate lessor.
Michael Looney is listed of “Occupier” of Lot 61 & 62. It appears that John Looney and Michael
Looney (Wm) and sharing these four Lots.
Michael Looney’s wife is Margaret O’Brien. I believe she was a sister of John
O’Brien. There is not a baptism record
for Margaret O’Brien but I have found that most families are missing baptism
records for some of the children in each family. Michael Looney probably married into the
O’Brien farm of Mount Scott.

William Looney died in 1918 and his son John Looney received
the property. John died around 1945 and
passed the land on to Timothy Halloran the husband of his daughter, Catherine
Looney. Timothy Halloran knows as Tadgh
O’Halloran of Mt Scott was a 2nd cousin of my father’s. Tadgh died in 1984 and his nephew Michael
Sexton received the property and still
holds the property in 2014.

O'Brien:

Oral tradition has it
that there were other borthers; that the family ran a "row of shops"
- although it is not known where this would have been.
Matthew and his brothers had a dispute with
their father and "jumped the counter". His daughter, May b 1870 told
her nephew Charles John O'Brien Jr. b. 1924 that Matthew's trade was really a
shop keeper (or draper) rather than a farmer. counsin Joan O'Brien daughter of
John Francis O'Brien told cousin, Monica Hanrahan (nee O'Brien - Matt's
daughter tha Grandfather, Matthew had been a bookseller. He was sick of selling
books and left on horseback with his friend McClure. He was a successful
farmer.
Matthew O'Brien
arrived in NZ along with his friend McClure and they brought property in the
Leeston District just South of Christchurch, on the South Island, NZ.
They traveled via the Victorian Australian
goldfields and had obviously done well commercially to be able to buy property.
We do not know wheather the good fortune was from mining (gold) or from
commercial activities (trading).
There is an interesting account of Matthew's
death in the farm diary and also from the obituary in the newspaper at the time
whcih shows that he was well a respected member of that pioneer farming
community.
Matthew's wife came
from Taum, County Galway.
